Just finished: Fall Course 2011

September 14 Technology for Concertos and Ensembles
Have you ever wished you or your student could
rehearse with the orchestra while learning a piece? We’ll discuss how to find or create materials for practice, how to use this type of practice efficiently,
and how to get students motivated to do more collaborative playing on their own.
September 28 Technology for Group Teaching
As more and more teachers incorporate group theory and summer group camps into their studio calendars, we look to technologies to streamline
teaching and motivating larger numbers of students efficiently. Learn to create a digital “black-board” to demonstrate concepts from the keyboard.
October 12 Everyday Technology for Every Lesson
This session will explore technology for teaching, motivating, practicing, and for the business elements of your studio. Come learn about the latest in self assessment tools, theory and composition software, and business tools to de-clutter your desk and free your “free” time. This session will also include
fun and efficient uses for mobile devices such as iPhones, iPads, and Android phones and tablets.
October 26 Technology for Distance Learning and Performance
This session will bring Juiliard pedagogy instructor and nationally known composer and pianist Paul Sheftel live via a couple of pieces of great
technology. Shana and Paul will engage in a lively
discussion on the nuts and bolts of teaching online piano lessons, performing long distance, and giving
long distance master classes, as well as demonstrate some relevant examples with volunteers from the audience. (students welcome)
November 9 Technology on a shoestring - Budget Solutions for Teaching and Performing
This BYOL (Bring Your Own Laptop) event explores free and very low-cost technology solutions to everyday teaching needs such as flashcards,
notation, and music history research. This session will also include a hands-on question and answer.
November 16 Recapturing the Past and Preserving the Present
This session will cover simple ways to create clear audio and video recordings, as well as all the modern ways of sharing them with friends and
family. We’ll also cover recording techniques for digital keyboards, as well as how these two technologies have been combined in groundbreaking ways
to recreate historical performances from greats like Glenn Gould, Art Tatum, and Sergei Rachmaninov.
December 7 Multimedia Performance Technology for Professionals and Students
We’ll cover ways to find or create engaging images and videos for your repertoire, musican-accessible ways to coordinate the performance, and some tips
and tricks for delivering a multimedia performance smoothly. This session will conclude with a multimedia piano duo performace by Shana Kirk
and guest George Litterst.

Fall Course 2010 Effortless Artistry The Taubman Approach

Certified Taubman Approach Specialist Brenna Berman taught seven classes on varied facets of the Taubman Approach. She explained why students and teachers alike are often not able to produce what they envision  at the keyboard with ease or total reliability. She showed that the difference between “talented” and “untalented” is often the presence or lack of proper body mechanics. She showed how technique and artistry are linked: a student’s capacity for musical expression and virtuosity is limitless if they improve, refine, and understand how to move at their instrument.

A TOUR OF ROMANTIC MUSICAL EUROPE was   the 2009 DAMTA FALL COURSE
The Denver Area Music Teachers Association’s 2009 Fall course was entitled “A
Tour of Romantic Musical Europe,” and was  presented by Dr. Stephen Fiess, AAGO. The
course focused on Romantic–period piano music, but  included a session about German
Lieder and French mélodies, with performances by Neal Wegener, tenor and Dr. Stephanie Berg,
soprano. Shana Kirk provided multimedia assistance for sessions that include discussions of
art, ballet, and films.

Denver Area MTA is the 2007-2008 winner of the Colorado State Music Teachers Association Local Association Award. With 87 members, DAMTA sponsors several events for their students, including a Spookathon held at a coffee house,  monthly musicales and a collaborative Achievement Day with South Suburban MTA.

In a long tradition, DAMTA hosts the annual Fall  Course which benefits the music community  throughout the Greater Metro region. DAMTA has
a mentoring program partnering with the Metro State Collegiate Chapter.
